We have an exciting programme of events for the year 2023. Please put them in your diary. For the AGM, Summer Outing and Founders’ Lecture we need to know numbers to enable us to provide catering, so please note the date for letting us know if you would like to attend. As part of the Coronation Festival to be held at the Banff Castle, the Society will be organising a photographic exhibition. This will be a display of award winning photographer, Ian Hardie’s, Royal photographs.

Publication of the story of the ‘Witness’, a sailing ship that travelled from Banff to Australia in 1852.

Founders’ Lecture


Dr. David Alston, an award winning writer and historian. His recent book

Slaves and Highlanders:  Silenced Histories of Scotland and the Caribbean, which won the Saltire Society History Book of the Year 2022 before going on to claim the overall Saltire Society Scottish Book of the Year prize. The theme for the lecture is ‘Banff and the Legacies of Slavery’

Christmas Quiz

Alistair’s Christmas quizzes are well known for their originality and fun. The quiz is based around wonderful historic photos from the local area and test your powers of observation, rather than your local history knowledge. Please let us know by 24th November if you wish to attend to allow for catering.
