The Volunteer Movement began in the County of Banff in 1794. George Forbes, sheriff-substitute of Banff, joined the Volunteers in 1797.
In 1798 he became Captain of the 1st Battalion (Artillery Company) Banff Volunteers, then Lieutenant in 1803. The Volunteers became the
Local Militia in 1808 and were disbanded in 1816 after the end of the Napoleonic War. George Forbes received this snuff box from his men
in 1802.
