This sword was most likely made in two countries – the blade in Germany and the basket in Scotland, where it was assembled. Blades were rarely made in Scotland at this time. The inscription Andria Ferrara refers to a well-known sword making family working in Italy in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It indicates a desire to ‘brand’ this sword as finest quality. (Original Ferrara swords usually have a crown marked on the blade). The hilt is wrapped with fish skin to aid the grip.
